ScolioMat™

A mat built for your scoliosis exercise routine — not a generic gym mat

Most exercise mats are made for general fitness. The ScolioMat™ is chosen for something more specific: the floor-based exercises that form part of the ScolioLife® programme — Schroth-style movements, postural work, stretching and gentle spinal decompression. It gives you a stable, cushioned, non-slip surface so you can focus on doing each exercise correctly and consistently at home.

Why people with scoliosis choose the ScolioMat™

verifiedStable, cushioned support — a 6mm surface that reduces impact on the joints and spine during floor exercises, which matters when you are working close to the ground.

verifiedHelps you hold correct form — the non-slip texture keeps you steady, so positions stay precise instead of sliding out of alignment.

verifiedSupports posture awareness — a firm, even base for the back, shoulder and core engagement that postural exercises rely on.

verifiedMakes the routine easy to keep up — lightweight and compact, so your home programme travels with you and stays part of daily life.

verifiedA calmer space to train — a dedicated mat helps turn your exercises into a consistent, focused daily habit.

What Makes a Good Scoliosis Exercise Mat?

A scoliosis exercise mat needs what a thin standard yoga mat often lacks: enough thickness to cushion the spine and rib hump during floor work, a genuinely non-slip surface so asymmetric Schroth-style positions stay stable under uneven load, and enough support to stay comfortable through long elongation and breathing drills. The ScolioMat™ is built at 6mm for exactly this.

How to Clean an Exercise Mat

To clean an exercise mat, wipe both sides after each session with a soft cloth dampened in warm water and a drop of mild soap, then air-dry it flat and away from direct sunlight before rolling it up. A deeper clean once a month keeps the grip and cushioning intact.

  • After each session — wipe both sides with a damp microfibre cloth and let the mat dry fully. Rolling a damp mat traps moisture and causes odour.
  • Weekly — wipe down with warm water and a few drops of mild soap, or a diluted white vinegar solution of roughly one part vinegar to three parts water. Go over it once more with clean water to lift any residue.
  • Monthly — sponge the mat gently in lukewarm soapy water, rinse thoroughly, then hang it over a drying rack until completely dry. This can take 12 to 24 hours.
  • Avoid — washing machines, tumble dryers, bleach, alcohol wipes and oil-based cleaners. These break down the surface and destroy the non-slip grip.
  • Storage — roll rather than fold, and keep the mat away from radiators and direct sunlight.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I clean my exercise mat?
Wipe both sides with a cloth dampened in warm water and mild soap after each use, then air-dry flat. Once a month, sponge it in lukewarm soapy water, rinse and hang it to dry completely before rolling.

Can I put an exercise mat in the washing machine?
No. Machine washing and tumble drying stretch and delaminate the mat and ruin the non-slip surface. Hand-wipe and air-dry only.

How thick should a mat be for scoliosis exercises?
Around 6mm suits most people. It cushions the spine and rib hump during floor work while staying firm enough to keep you stable in asymmetric positions. Very thick mats feel soft but make balance harder.

Do I need a special mat for Schroth-style exercises?
You need a mat that will not slide under uneven, asymmetric loading and that cushions bony areas during long holds. The ScolioMat™ is made for this and is used as part of the ScolioLife® home programme.

How do I stop my mat from smelling?
Odour is almost always trapped moisture. Always let the mat dry fully before rolling it, wipe it down after sweaty sessions, and store it in a ventilated spot.
