ScolioLife Method
The ScolioLife® Method
What is the ScolioLife® Method? The ScolioLife® Method is a non-surgical scoliosis correction system developed by Dr Kevin Lau that addresses the spine as a three-dimensional structure and works to reduce the Cobb angle rather than only slowing or holding a curve. It brings together four elements that are usually offered in isolation — the ScolioAlign™ 3D over-corrective brace, scoliosis-specific corrective exercise, specialised corrective equipment, and nutritional therapy — into a single, individualised programme. Addressing the curve from several directions at once, rather than through one modality, is what distinguishes the Method and underpins the changes documented on follow-up X-rays. Individual results vary.
A Three-Dimensional, Root-Cause Approach
Scoliosis is a three-dimensional deformity: the spine rotates as well as curves sideways. Many conventional approaches act on a single plane or a single segment — a rigid brace presses against the curve, or an exercise programme works the surrounding muscles. The ScolioLife® Method is built around the understanding that lasting change requires the spine to be assessed and corrected in three dimensions, and along its full length from the pelvis to the skull.
Rather than focusing only on the visibly curved segment, the Method maps how the primary curve, the compensatory curves, posture, and the nervous system's control of alignment interact. Identifying these underlying drivers — not just the most obvious bend — is what allows the programme to be aimed at the cause of the imbalance rather than its appearance. This root-cause orientation is the reason the components are combined the way they are.
Four Integrated Components
Each component addresses a different part of the problem. Used together, they reinforce one another in a way that no single intervention can.
-
ScolioAlign™ 3D over-corrective brace — built from a three-dimensional model of the body to work toward reducing the curve, not simply holding it in place.
-
Scoliosis-specific corrective exercise — refined from Dr Lau's study of Schroth, CLEAR, Pilates and yoga, and prescribed to each patient's individual curve pattern.
-
Specialised static and dynamic equipment — used to retrain spinal alignment and build the stability that holds correction through growth.
-
Nutritional therapy — informed by Dr Lau's master's degree in nutrition, addressing the dietary and neurochemical factors increasingly linked to spinal imbalance.
Because these four elements are delivered as one coordinated programme rather than separate treatments, the correction achieved by the brace is supported by the exercise and equipment, and the whole programme is built on a nutritional foundation. This integration is the core of what makes the Method more complete than any one approach on its own.
How ScolioAlign™ Differs From a Traditional Hospital Brace
A traditional hospital brace, such as the Boston brace, is a rigid two-dimensional shell. Its purpose is to stop a curve from progressing while a child is still growing — it holds the spine, but it is not designed to change it. The ScolioAlign™ brace is a more advanced design: it is built from a three-dimensional model of the patient's body and applies controlled over-correction, so its clinical goal is to actively reduce the Cobb angle rather than maintain it. Because it is engineered around posture and movement as well as restraint, it functions as part of the correction programme rather than as a stand-alone device.
ScolioLife® Method vs Schroth vs Hospital Bracing
The clearest way to understand where the Method sits is to compare it with the two approaches patients most often ask about.
| ScolioLife® Method | Schroth Method | Traditional Hospital Brace | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clinical goal | Reduce the Cobb angle and rebalance the whole spine | Postural correction through exercise; slow progression | Hold the curve and stop progression during growth |
| Bracing | ScolioAlign™ 3D over-corrective brace | None — exercise only | Rigid 2D shell (e.g. Boston brace) |
| Corrective exercise | Integrated, curve-specific programme | Core of the method | Not included |
| Nutritional therapy | Included as a core component | Not included | Not included |
| Spinal focus | Whole spine, pelvis to skull | Curve-specific | Braced segment only |
| Dimensional model | Three-dimensional, individualised | Three-dimensional exercise prescription | Two-dimensional standardised mould |
| Root-cause assessment | Central to the programme | Postural focus | Not part of the device |
Schroth is a respected scoliosis-specific exercise approach, and rigid bracing has a recognised role in slowing progressive curves during growth. The ScolioLife® Method is not a replacement for either idea but an advancement of both: it combines three-dimensional over-corrective bracing with curve-specific exercise, equipment, and nutrition in one supervised programme aimed at correction rather than containment.
Why the Method Produces Measurable Change
Single-modality approaches each address one part of scoliosis. A brace alone can hold a curve; exercise alone can strengthen and improve posture. Because the ScolioLife® Method works on the curve three-dimensionally, along the full length of the spine, and addresses the underlying drivers rather than a single symptom, its clinical goal is measurable reduction in the Cobb angle, documented through before-and-after X-rays. The results patients see are a consequence of this depth — several correcting forces working together over a structured course of care — rather than any one device or exercise. Suitability and outcomes are assessed individually, and individual results vary.
How the Programme Is Delivered
Every case begins with a comprehensive consultation and assessment with Dr Kevin Lau, including a review of existing X-rays and a full postural analysis. From this, the primary and compensatory curves and their underlying contributors are mapped, and an individualised programme is built — combining the ScolioAlign™ brace, curve-specific exercises, equipment, and a nutrition plan. Progress is then monitored throughout the course of care, with a post-programme X-ray review to document any change.
Local Extended Care — gradual curve reduction
For patients living in or able to travel regularly to a ScolioLife® clinic. Sessions run once or twice weekly over roughly one to three months, with progress personally monitored by Dr Lau and minimal disruption to school or work. A post-programme X-ray review documents any change.
Overseas Intensive Care — rapid curve reduction
For patients travelling from outside the region. The intensive programme delivers concentrated daily sessions across consecutive working days, followed by a customised home rehabilitation protocol to consolidate gains and support spinal stability through growth. Follow-up reviews continue remotely by video or email.
The Clinician Behind the Method
The ScolioLife® Method was developed and is led by Dr Kevin Lau (Doctor of Chiropractic, RMIT, Australia)*, who has specialised in non-surgical scoliosis care for more than 20 years. His interest began with a family experience of scoliosis and led him to study the most effective non-surgical approaches worldwide — Chiropractic, the Schroth Method, the CLEAR protocol, yoga, Pilates and bracing — before combining them, alongside a master's degree in nutrition, into the integrated programme offered today. His books on scoliosis exercise and nutrition are read internationally, and patients travel from around the world to be assessed, with remote review available for those who cannot attend in person. ScolioLife® operates a clinic in Kuala Lumpur (Boulevard Office, Mid Valley Megamall, Lingkaran Syed Putra).
Frequently Asked Questions About the ScolioLife® Method
What makes the ScolioLife® Method different from other scoliosis approaches?
Most approaches use a single modality — a brace or an exercise programme. The ScolioLife® Method integrates four: the ScolioAlign™ 3D over-corrective brace, scoliosis-specific exercise, specialised equipment, and nutritional therapy, all built around a three-dimensional, whole-spine, root-cause assessment. The clinical goal is to reduce the Cobb angle rather than only hold it. Individual results vary.
How does the ScolioAlign™ 3D brace differ from a Boston or hospital brace?
A Boston-type hospital brace is a rigid 2D shell designed to stop a curve from worsening during growth — it holds the spine but is not designed to change it. The ScolioAlign™ brace is built from a 3D model of the body and applies controlled over-correction, so its clinical goal is to actively reduce the Cobb angle while working as part of the wider correction programme.
What is the difference between the ScolioLife® Method and the Schroth Method?
The Schroth Method is a scoliosis-specific exercise approach with no bracing or nutrition component. The ScolioLife® Method draws on Schroth-style exercise but integrates it with the ScolioAlign™ 3D brace, specialised equipment, and nutritional therapy in one supervised programme aimed at correction rather than containment.
Is the ScolioLife® Method suitable for adults, or only children?
Both. The Method is used for adolescents seeking to avoid surgery and for adults experiencing pain or curves that progress later in life. The programme is individualised to each patient's curve pattern and goals.
Do I need to live in Kuala Lumpur to follow the ScolioLife® Method?
No. Local patients use the Extended Care plan with regular clinic sessions, while overseas patients use the Intensive Care plan with concentrated daily sessions followed by a home protocol and remote review. ScolioLife® has its Malaysia clinic in Kuala Lumpur (Boulevard Office, Mid Valley Megamall), serving patients nationwide.
Can I visit the ScolioLife clinic from outside Kuala Lumpur?
Yes. Our clinic is in Mid Valley Megamall, Kuala Lumpur, and we regularly care for patients travelling from Penang, Johor Bahru, Ipoh, Melaka, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching. For patients coming from Sabah, Sarawak or further outstation, we can arrange a remote X-ray review beforehand and concentrate the in-clinic phase into a shorter block of consecutive days.
