Kyphosis Correction in Singapore — Non-Surgical 3D Bracing & Rehabilitation

What is kyphosis correction? Kyphosis correction is a structured, non-surgical clinical pathway that combines a custom over-corrective 3D brace, scoliosis-grade rehabilitation exercise, and targeted nutritional support to reduce thoracic spinal curvature, restore postural alignment, and halt curve progression — without surgery. The ScolioLife® program is delivered in two formats: a Local Extended Care plan (1–3 months, weekly visits) for Singapore-based patients, and an Overseas Intensive Care plan (3–5 consecutive days) for international patients travelling for treatment. Both are led personally by Dr Kevin Lau (Doctor of Chiropractic, RMIT, Australia)*, with over 20 years of non-surgical spine practice and three published books on spinal correction.

What Makes Kyphosis Correction With ScolioLife® Different

Most clinics stop progression. We aim to reduce the curve.

The standard of care for kyphosis in most Singapore hospitals and physiotherapy clinics is one of three things: a generic posture-correction strap, a rigid Boston-style brace prescribed to halt progression but not reduce the curve, or a referral to spinal fusion surgery once the Cobb angle exceeds 70°. ScolioLife® was built around a different premise: that the same biomechanical principles proven to reduce scoliosis curves non-surgically can be applied to kyphosis — and that a brace which actively over-corrects in three dimensions outperforms one designed only to hold the spine in place.

Five structural differences:

  • verifiedScolioAlign™ 3D over-corrective brace. Engineered around a 3D scan of each patient's spine, the brace actively unloads the structurally compromised vertebral segments rather than passively restraining the shoulders. Unlike a Boston brace (which is built from a 2D cast and aims only to stop progression), ScolioAlign™ is designed to reduce the underlying thoracic curve.
  • verifiedScoliosis-grade rehabilitation, adapted for kyphosis. Generic core work does not address the asymmetric loading patterns that maintain the curve. Our exercise prescription is built on the same Schroth-derived corrective principles used in non-surgical scoliosis treatment, retargeted at the thoracic extensors, deep postural stabilisers, and forward-head muscle chains.
  • verifiedNutritional protocol for bone density and connective tissue. Particularly relevant for adolescent Scheuermann's patients in active growth and adults at risk of vertebral compression fracture. Calibrated to support bone mineral density, anti-inflammatory status, and connective-tissue resilience.
  • verifiedPersonal weekly monitoring by Dr Kevin Lau. Local-program patients are seen by Dr Lau himself, not a delegated therapist — this is uncommon in Singapore spine clinics of equivalent scale.
  • verifiedTwo delivery formats — built for both local and international patients. The same clinical protocol, structured for either weekly local visits or a single intensive overseas trip.

Mission Goals — Structural Correction Targets We Aim to Achieve

What "correction" actually means, by kyphosis type

The structural correction we aim for depends entirely on the type and severity of kyphosis at intake. Generic claims of "we fix posture" are unhelpful — and frequently inaccurate — because postural kyphosis, Scheuermann's disease, and age-related hyperkyphosis each respond differently to the same protocol. The targets below are the clinical goals our protocols are calibrated against. Individual results vary with type, age, baseline severity, and adherence to the prescribed home programme.

1. Postural Kyphosis — Normalise the Curve Toward <30°

For postural (flexible) kyphosis, the clinical goal is to return the standing thoracic curve into the postural-normal range of 20° to 30° on a standing X-ray, with the patient able to hold neutral alignment without conscious effort within 6–12 weeks. This typically requires retraining of the thoracic extensors and deep postural stabilisers, plus correction of the forward-head loading pattern that drives most desk-related postural collapse.

2. Scheuermann's Kyphosis — Reduce 10° to 20° Below Baseline and Halt Progression

For structural Scheuermann's disease below the surgical threshold (generally under 70° Cobb angle), the clinical goal is a measurable 10° to 20° reduction from the baseline Cobb angle, plus a definitive halt to year-on-year progression. The window in which a 10–20° reduction is realistic narrows after skeletal maturity (around age 17), so we are most effective working with patients between ages 10 and 16 — the period of active spinal remodelling. Beyond the surgical threshold, our role is bracing and rehabilitation in coordination with surgical consultation.

3. Adult Hyperkyphosis & Age-Related Hyperkyphosis — Reduce 8° to 15° and Halt Vertebral Compression

For adult and age-related hyperkyphosis (most common in postmenopausal women over 60), the clinical goal is an 8° to 15° reduction from the baseline Cobb angle, halted vertebral compression-fracture progression, preserved standing height, and a measurable improvement in trunk extension strength. The nutritional protocol is especially load-bearing here — without addressing bone mineral density, structural gains made through bracing and exercise will not hold.

4. Across All Types — Functional Targets We Track Alongside Cobb Angle

Cobb angle is the headline number but it is not the only metric we track. At every milestone visit we re-measure:

  • verifiedStanding height — particularly relevant for older patients losing height to vertebral compression.
  • verifiedTrunk extension strength — back-extensor muscle strength is the structural foundation that holds a corrected curve.
  • verifiedWall-test distance — distance from the back of the head to the wall when heels, buttocks, and shoulder blades are touching it. A practical, repeatable indicator of postural recovery.
  • verifiedChest expansion and forced vital capacity — for patients with severe curves where reduced lung capacity is a presenting concern.
  • verifiedForward-head distance — the horizontal offset between the ear and the shoulder, viewed from the side.

Timeline expectation: Most patients see measurable postural change within 6–8 weeks of consistent protocol adherence. Structural change (Cobb angle reduction visible on follow-up X-ray) typically follows over the subsequent 3–12 months, with re-measurement at defined milestones — usually month 3, month 6, and month 12.

Award-Winning Kyphosis Correction Programs

Two delivery formats — same clinical protocol

The ScolioLife® kyphosis correction protocol is identical regardless of which programme format you enter. What differs is the pace, the visit cadence, and the travel commitment. Patients living in Singapore (and many who commute from Johor Bahru and southern Peninsular Malaysia) opt for the Local Extended Care plan because they can absorb 1–3 months of weekly visits without interrupting work or school. International patients flying in from Indonesia, the wider Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, and Europe opt for the Overseas Intensive Care plan, which concentrates ~25 hours of in-clinic therapy into a single 1–2 week trip.

Local Kyphosis Correction for Gradual Curve Reduction

Recommended for patients who live in Singapore

For patients who live near Dr Kevin Lau (Doctor of Chiropractic, RMIT, Australia)*'s clinic at Tong Building, 302 Orchard Road, and are able to attend regular weekly appointments, ScolioLife® offers the Extended Care plan. This is the same corrective protocol used in the overseas intensive — delivered at a pace that requires no time off school or work.

  • verifiedVisit cadence: 2 sessions per week, each approximately 60–90 minutes.
  • verifiedDuration: 1 to 3 months of in-clinic therapy, depending on baseline curve and kyphosis type.
  • verifiedPersonally monitored: Every weekly progression visit is led by Dr Kevin Lau himself, not delegated to a therapist or assistant.
  • verifiedCustom ScolioAlign™ 3D brace built from your 3D scan, fitted in-clinic, and refined session by session as your alignment improves.
  • verifiedScoliosis-grade rehabilitation prescribed and progressed at each visit — targeting thoracic extensors, postural stabilisers, and forward-head muscle chains.
  • verifiedNutritional protocol calibrated for bone density, anti-inflammatory status, and connective-tissue resilience.
  • verifiedHome programme between visits — brace-wear schedule, exercise sets, and supplement prescription documented in your personal patient portal.
  • verifiedMilestone X-rays at month 3, month 6, and month 12 to track Cobb-angle reduction and structural change.

Why patients choose the Local plan: No need to take leave from work or school. Weekly direct contact with Dr Lau (rather than delegated therapist time). Gradual, sustainable adaptation as the brace and exercise programme progress in difficulty. Best suited to patients with flexible work-from-home arrangements, students, or anyone within a commutable radius of central Singapore.

Overseas Kyphosis Correction for Rapid Curve Reduction

Recommended for patients who live outside of Singapore

For international patients flying to Singapore for treatment, ScolioLife® offers the Intensive Care plan — the same corrective protocol as the local programme, concentrated into a single 1–2 week visit. New Zealand patients fly to Singapore from Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch via direct or one-stop connections. The 1–2 week intensive consolidates the full programme into a single trip. Intensive Care is the standard pathway for patients travelling from Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Sabah/Sarawak), Indonesia (Jakarta, Surabaya, Medan, Bali), India, the Middle East, Europe, and Australia/New Zealand.

  • verifiedTherapy schedule: 3 to 5 consecutive days of in-clinic therapy (Monday to Friday — weekends free for rest and recovery).
  • verifiedDaily session length: Up to 4–5 hours of one-on-one therapy per day.
  • verifiedWeekly total: Approximately 25 hours of structured in-clinic therapy across the trip.
  • verifiedCustom ScolioAlign™ 3D brace scanned, manufactured, and fitted within the visit. You leave Singapore with the brace on your spine, not a prescription you have to fill back home.
  • verifiedTake-home rehabilitation protocol built specifically for your curve and your living arrangements — designed to maintain in-clinic gains, drive further structural correction, and protect against regression during growth spurts (for adolescent patients).
  • verifiedPre-visit digital X-ray review — send your imaging before travel so your assessment, brace design, and rehabilitation plan are already mapped out when you walk in.
  • verifiedFollow-up via telehealth at the milestone intervals (month 3, month 6, month 12) — only your local follow-up X-rays need to be uploaded.
  • verifiedLogistics support: The clinic team assists with accommodation recommendations near Orchard Road and scheduling around connecting flight times.

Why patients choose the Intensive plan: The full structural correction window is compressed into one trip, with minimal disruption to family schedule, school year, or work calendar. Travel cost is incurred once rather than repeatedly. The brace and home programme leave with you and are designed to function autonomously between telehealth check-ins.

What Every Programme Includes — The Four Pillars

Identical clinical content across Local and Overseas plans

  • verified1. 3D Postural & Spinal Assessment. Digital postural scan, standing weight-bearing X-ray review, and Cobb-angle measurement. This is the only way to distinguish postural from structural kyphosis and to detect mild scoliosis that is frequently masked by the kyphosis on standard imaging.
  • verified2. Custom ScolioAlign™ 3D Over-Corrective Brace. Manufactured from your 3D scan. Designed to actively unload structurally compromised vertebral segments while the exercise programme retrains alignment — unlike off-the-shelf posture straps and 2D Boston braces that only restrain shoulder position.
  • verified3. Scoliosis-Grade Rehabilitation Exercise. Schroth-derived corrective protocols adapted for kyphosis. Targets the thoracic extensors, deep postural stabilisers, and forward-head muscle chains.
  • verified4. Nutritional Protocol. Calibrated for bone mineral density (especially for adolescents in growth and adults at risk of compression fracture), anti-inflammatory status, and connective-tissue resilience.

Who This Programme Is For — And Who It Is Not For

We are direct with our patients

The ScolioLife® kyphosis correction programme is appropriate for:

  • verifiedPostural kyphosis at any age — adolescents, desk-bound adults, postpartum mothers.
  • verifiedScheuermann's kyphosis below the surgical threshold (generally under 70° Cobb angle).
  • verifiedAdult and age-related hyperkyphosis without acute vertebral fracture.
  • verifiedKyphosis coexisting with mild to moderate scoliosis (we detect and address both in a single workup).
  • verifiedPost-bracing patients whose curve has plateaued but not reduced — and who want to attempt structural correction.

We do not see patients for:

  • verifiedAcute spinal fracture or recent trauma — refer to Accident & Emergency.
  • verifiedSuspected spinal cord compression, cauda equina syndrome, malignancy, or infection — refer for urgent specialist review.
  • verifiedSevere congenital kyphosis with neurological signs — refer for paediatric spine surgery evaluation.
  • verifiedCobb angles above approximately 70° in skeletally mature patients where surgical fusion may already be indicated.

If kyphosis is accompanied by progressive neurological weakness, unexplained weight loss, fever, or loss of bowel or bladder control, please seek emergency medical care first.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much Cobb-angle reduction can I realistically expect?

It depends on your kyphosis type and baseline. For postural kyphosis our clinical goal is normalisation toward the 20–30° range. For Scheuermann's kyphosis below the surgical threshold the goal is a 10–20° reduction. For age-related hyperkyphosis the goal is an 8–15° reduction plus halted progression. These are clinical goals; individual results vary by type, age, baseline severity, and adherence to the home programme.

How quickly will I see results?

Measurable postural change — visible at the wall test and in side-profile photos — typically appears within 6 to 8 weeks of consistent protocol adherence. Structural change (Cobb-angle reduction visible on follow-up X-ray) typically follows over 3 to 12 months, with re-measurement at month 3, 6, and 12 milestones.

What is the difference between the Local plan and the Overseas Intensive plan?

The clinical content is identical. The Local Extended Care plan delivers it over 1–3 months with 2 weekly visits — better for residents who cannot interrupt work or school. The Overseas Intensive Care plan concentrates approximately 25 hours of in-clinic therapy into 3–5 consecutive days — better for international patients consolidating treatment into a single trip.

Can I do this if I have already had a Boston brace and it did not help?

Yes. A large share of our adolescent patients arrive after a period in a Boston or Boston-style brace where progression was halted but the underlying curve was not reduced. The ScolioAlign™ 3D over-corrective brace is built for the reduction phase, not the holding phase, and is regularly prescribed as a follow-on to a Boston-brace course that has plateaued.

Will I need to wear the brace forever?

No. Brace wear is structured in phases — active correction phase (typically several months of structured wear schedule), consolidation phase (reducing wear hours as the corrective gains stabilise), and maintenance phase (intermittent wear during high-load activities or postural-fatigue periods). The specific schedule is set against your milestone X-ray measurements, not against a fixed calendar.

I am an adult over 60 with hyperkyphosis and osteoporosis. Is this safe for me?

Yes — and addressing your case early matters. The corrective protocol is calibrated for bone-density-aware progression. The nutritional protocol is particularly relevant in this population: structural gains made through bracing and exercise will not hold if bone health is not addressed in parallel. We will request your most recent bone-density (DEXA) scan during the consultation.

Do you accept patients flying in from Malaysia or Indonesia?

Yes — these are two of our largest international patient groups. We regularly see patients from Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Johor Bahru, Jakarta, Surabaya, Medan, and Bali. The Overseas Intensive Care plan is structured specifically around the constraints of one-trip travel, with pre-visit digital X-ray review and full brace fitting completed within the visit.

What if my curve is too severe for non-surgical correction?

If your Cobb angle is above approximately 70° and you are skeletally mature, surgical evaluation may already be indicated. We will tell you this directly during the consultation and refer you for surgical opinion. ScolioLife® may still have a supportive bracing and rehabilitation role in coordination with the surgical team — but we will not recommend a non-surgical programme as a primary pathway where surgical fusion is the appropriate intervention.

Take the First Step — Book Your 3D Structural Assessment

Your assessment determines your pathway — local or overseas

The single most important step in non-surgical kyphosis correction is the structural assessment that distinguishes a postural curve from a structural one — and that quantifies the baseline Cobb angle the protocol is calibrated against. A standard physiotherapy or chiropractic visit will not give you this. A school screening will rarely give you this. A normal-reported MRI will not give you this. A clinical 3D postural and spinal assessment will.

Your next step is one of two things:
