For a number of years, the most common form of management for scoliosis – the curvature of a person’s spine – has been the use one of a few, different braces; the Boston Brace, the Charleston Brace, the Milwaukee Brace, and the Wilmington Brace.
Each are supposed to be best suited for a particular function and it’s up to your doctor to choose the best option for your needs depending on your age, growth rate, the location and size of the curvature along your spine, as well as the cause of the condition. Is this an instance of neuromuscular scoliosis in which the condition was a result of some sort of muscle problem? Or is this idiopathic scoliosis? This may be the most commonly known form of the condition – being seen frequently amongst adolescents but having no real cause.
The problem with these braces lies in their overall inefficiency. Studies have shown that these other models simply do not contribute to any positive change in the trajectory of cases of scoliosis, most notably adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis moving through growth spurts during puberty. The ScolioAlign™ 3D Brace builds upon his knowledge of using the latest 3D braces from around the world. Developed by Dr Kevin Lau who initially set out to design a more efficient solution, having recognized how short doctors were truly falling when it came to adequately serving patients with scoliosis, offering little to no means of real, long-term improvement.

How Is the ScolioAlign™ 3D Brace Different from Other Braces?
So what exactly is this ScolioAlign™ 3D brace and what makes it significant?
Well, unlike so-called “hard” braces which attempt to halt the progression of scoliosis by essentially immobilizing the patient, the ScolioAlign™ 3D Brace works towards improving and ultimately correcting scoliosis by guiding the body into the optimal shape. A ScolioAlign™ 3D is an over-corrective brace. It works by guiding the body and spine into a posture that is the opposite of how the scoliosis is shaped.
This entails positioning the patient in an exaggeratedly corrected position that presents the direct opposite or mirror image of the patient’s spinal curvature abnormality. As a result, the brace is able to effectively reduce the scoliosis and realign the spine, in addition, to reduce various other distortions in posture.
The other, older braces merely applied pressure against visible humps along with the patient’s figure in effort to prevent any further curvature in the spine, compressing the trunk and potentially resulting in pain or even difficulty with breathing down the road.
However, new developments in brace technology have shown doctors that there is a way to help their patients achieve the maximum correction possible. It’s also led to the construction of the most comfortable braces that have ever been available on the market.
Whats the difference between standard scoliosisbrace and ScolioAlign™ Brace offered by Dr. Kevin Lau?
A standard brace will compress the whole body and push the spine from all sides. By doing so its primary goal is to prevent scoliosis from increasing and cannot offer any corrective effects.
ScolioAlign™ brace is designed to offer over corrective force on the body and push the spine only at certain points. Thus, not only can the scoliosis be prevented from worsening, but also correcting the curvature!
Especially during a time as crucial as the pubertal growth spurt, it has been proven Chêneau-style, in-brace correction efforts have been demonstrated to promote the most progress in terms of correction any spinal abnormalities.
Not only are ScolioAlign™ 3D braces able to halt the progression of any curves in the spine, most importantly, they are able to improve spinal and postural distortions and provide the safest solution while doing so. How the ScolioAlign™ 3D Brace is Made
Each ScolioAlign™ 3D Brace is crafted using CAD/CAM (Computer-Aided Design and Computer-Aided Manufacturing) technology to specifically accommodate each individual patient. Dr Kevin Lau combines 3D full-body laser scanning technology, x-rays and posture photographs.
Each brace is custom designed for the individual with Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and then created with Computer Aided Manufacture (CAM). The clinical measurements are recorded and a perfect rendering of the scoliosis is produced. That information is then used to construct a custom-fitting brace.
