ScolioLife FAQ

Scoliolife™ Frequently Asked Questions

An Scoliometer measures distortions of the torso. The patient is asked to bend over, with arms dangling and palms pressed together, until a curve can be observed in the thoracic area (the upper back). The Scoliometer is placed on the back and used to measure the apex (the highest point) of the curve. The patient is then asked to continue bending until the curve in the lower back can be seen; the apex of this curve is then measured.

ScolioLife™ begins with a series of specialized x-rays that expose patients to significantly less radiation than a traditional x-ray exam. These images are then used to measure the alignment in all three dimensions, along with the severity of your scoliosis and your age. Based on these findings, we can customize your treatment plan and therapy.

Treatment involves spinal stretching exercises, gentle traction exercises, static and ambulatory decompression, shockwave therapy, vibration therapy, spinal mobilization therapies, precision chiropractic adjustments, scoliosis-specific nutritional advice, scoliosis-specific exercises, whole-body vibration therapy, and body balancing exercises. One treatment session may last between 45 to 60 minutes.

Chiropractors typically focus on adjusting or manipulating the spine, which is effective for relieving pain and imbalances in the body, but not for straightening scoliosis.

The ScolioLife™ Scoliosis Treatment Protocols were developed by Dr Kevin Lau and uses various treatment methods specially created for scoliosis. By using our own unique combination of methods, we can offer patients an unrivalled level of treatment success that is not available elsewhere

All of the applied adjustments, therapies and ScolioAlign™ 3D brace are then based around these three-dimensional measurements so each patient receives care that is appropriate and specific to their spine. ScolioLife™ doctors also use specialized equipment and therapies to treat scoliosis.

Some people may experience mild discomfort during or after a ScolioLife™ method, but ScolioLife™ treatment is generally not considered to be a painful form of therapy. The amount of discomfort a person may experience will depend on the specific technique being used and the person’s individual pain tolerance. Dr Kevin Lau is trained to use gentle techniques and to adjust the treatment to each person’s comfort level. If a person is concerned about discomfort during a chiropractic treatment, they should talk to their chiropractor about their concerns.

Treatment results may vary depending on a number of factors, including age and severity of scoliosis. Previously, patients experienced significant improvements in various areas of health-related quality of life, including pain levels, lung function, physical function, posture and appearance. A reduction in spinal misalignment, measured on an x-ray by Cobb angles and other measurements, is also a common finding. It is crucial for patients to actively participate and engage in their rehabilitation therapies, ScolioAlign™ orthotic protocols, and exercise program in order to maintain positive results.

ScolioLife™ method utilize various treatment modalities, including manual spinal manipulation, whole-body vibration, and spinal disc decompression. The chiropractic adjustments are so gentle and versatile, they’re safe for almost anyone, from infants to children to older adults. ScolioLife™ method has helped many patients of all ages with scoliosis, from ages 2 to 80, and above.

The ScolioLife™ methods have demonstrated success with non-idiopathic cases of scoliosis, such as congenital malformations like hemivertebrae, and neuromuscular conditions such as cerebral palsy. These cases do tend to be more complex, and ScolioLife™ recommends that individuals with congenital or neuromuscular scoliosis get a consultation in person or though skype to assess the suitability of the therapy.

The ScolioLife™ method can be tailored to meet the needs of wheelchair users. Sitting in a wheelchair for a prolonged period puts a lot of pressure on the spine, which can lead to the body adopting abnormal postures to alleviate pain and pressure which can aggravate scoliosis.

Treatment plans for scoliosis vary from person to person based on their severity, risk of progression, and other factors. It can be as short as a few months for an adult with mild scoliosis, or as long as several years for a young child with severe scoliosis.

During ScolioLife™ therapy, patients learn how to be independently healthy and take care of their scoliosis with the tools and exercises taught.

ScoliosisLife™ is a customized exercise program designed to address the specific spinal configuration of each patient. It includes scoliosis-specific exercises, stretches, spinal mobility exercises, balance training exercises, gentle traction, and reactive postural remodeling exercises. There may be times when patients need to obtain a ScolioAlign™ 3D Brace to wear at home.
